Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay System in 2025.
Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.
Replay technology will make its debut at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.
Athletes will gain the option to contest certain calls from the chair umpire, echoing the protocol already in place at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.
The new system will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.
This move comes just a season following the AELTC rolled out ELC, which brought an end to the 147-year tradition of line judges.
Reviewable Decisions
Players cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to review other situations, including:
- Whether a ball has bounced twice.
- If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
- Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.
Notably, there will be no cap on the amount of challenges a competitor can initiate.
A Recent Example
A recent case took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.
Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."
The umpire watched a replay and determined the player was responsible for interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
This technology are not new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at every one of its events.
Additional Innovations
Another change at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses instances where the crowd have sometimes been unsure if a shot was out or in.
In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
