The Film 'Together' Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

Consider this a test for long-term couples who enjoy horror films: Get comfortable with your loved one and stream Together. The 2025 indie hit just made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. At first glance, it may seem like typical biological terror, but inside Together lies a profound meditation about our choices in loving one another.

A Directorial Debut Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together is the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for ten years. Married in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a particular energy to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The story starts when the couple move from the big city to the countryside for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical story element, sure, but that’s mostly where the cliches conclude. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While walking near their country house, a tempest descends, and the protagonists discover an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence begins influencing the couple. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a slow burn fright fest, weaving in bits of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but never too gross) body horror, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). Shanks orchestrates these parts seamlessly and presents them in a consistently growing aura of dread.

Nuanced Portrayals

A large part of Together is only the two lead actors, and they masterfully render countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and distant from his social circle. He fears the notion of completely losing his individual identity in another person. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision in Together avoids making Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

The couple grapple with the sort of issues that arise in long-term unions after ten years. Deep down, they have affection for each other. They still laugh together, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their future together.

Thematic Depth

While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the allegory does not come across as clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal work together in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that single viewers have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. On the other hand, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could act as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the ending plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply look at your significant other and state, “I understand that choice”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can embark on today.

Together is available to watch on Hulu as of this moment.
